Q » Why is chemical oxygen demand (COD) higher than BOD?
03 Nov, 2025
A » Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) measures the total quantity of oxygen required to oxidize both biodegradable and non-biodegradable organic matter, while Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) only measures the oxygen needed to break down biodegradable matter by microbial action. Thus, COD is higher than BOD because it accounts for the complete oxidation of all organic compounds present in the water, not just those that are biologically degradable.
